Director Archie Mayo’s 1933 romantic drama Ever in My Heart finds Barbara Stanwyck on top tragic form as Mary Archer, who marries foreign – German! – academic Hugo Wilbrandt (Otto Kruger) pre-World War One. Hugo joins a college faculty and the couple prosper. But, when war comes, it brings anti-German hatred, and she finds out that he is an agent for the Kaiser.
Ever in My Heart is a great weepie, with smashing ensemble acting in a throbbingly handled, over-the-top tragic story. Ralph Bellamy also stars as Mary’s friend Jeff, who starts the plot off by bringing back Hugo with him from a trip to Germany.
The screenplay by Bertram Millhauser is based on a story by Bertram Millhauser and Beulah Marie Dix.
Also in the cast are Ralph Bellamy, Ruth Donnelly, Frank Albertson, Ronnie Cosby, Clara Blandick, Willard Robertson, Nella Walker, Harry Beresford, Virginia Howell, Florence Roberts, George Cooper and Laura Hope Crews.
Arthur L Todd shoots in black and white.
