Everly *** (2014, Salma Hayek, Hiroyuki Watanabe, Laura Cepeda) – Movie Review

1a

Salma Hayek goes through hell and high water to face down hitmen sent by her ex, a mob boss, while holed up in her apartment.

Director Joe Lynch‘s inventive and exciting action thriller is very full-on nasty and a throwback to Nineties early Tarantino. You realise pretty early on that it’s all going to be set in one location, more or less like Reservoir Dogs, and that’s fine (1) if the set is great – it is!- and (2) the writer (Yale Hannon) and director have got the skills to keep it involving – they have!

It’s not the best ever action thriller, and it is truly unpleasant, even a little more than I was bargaining for. But it does deliver the goods for the fans. The action is dynamic and gory, and the script throws in a little black humour to vary the pace.

Hayek is excellent, more or less the whole show, more or less convincing you she really could do all this mayhem stuff. You root for her the whole way, as you’d have to if it to work.

Just so you know, it’s rated R for strong bloody violence, torture, nudity, sexual images and strong language.
