In writer-director Woody Allen’s 1996 comedy, Everyone Says ‘I Loved Making This Movie’ but No One Says’ I Can Sing’.
Joe (Allen) fancies pretty woman Von (Julia Roberts) in Venice in this quite delicious musical comedy – Woody’s first. Edward Norton and Drew Barrymore give appealing support as soppy teenage lovers Holden and Skylar. Goldie Hawn and Alan Alda play Skylar’s parents, Bob and Steffi. Joe is a friend of theirs, who has a daughter, DJ (Natasha Lyonne), with Steffi.
Returning to his appealing schmuck character of old, Allen kisses Roberts, sings the songs of his youth and gets to dance with Hawn on the banks of the Seine in Paris – and gets away with it all, oh so sweetly.
Edward Hibbert (from TV’s Frasier) does a great dance number as the Harry Winston jewellery salesman and Tim Roth pops in unexpectedly as a young thug. Natalie Portman, Gaby Hoffman, Lukas Haas, Billy Crudup and David Ogden Stiers also star.
