Director Ivan Reitman’s amiable and likeable 2001 sci-fi comedy stars Dan Aykroyd as the Arizona governor who is understandably in a bit of a tizzy: ‘My state out there is being overrun by aliens!’ A meteor has hit Earth, carrying alien life forms evolving at the speed of light.
If scientists David Duchovny and Julianne Moore don’t do something about it fast, the aliens will take over the US in two months. Duchovny’s in a bit of a flap, too: ‘Hey, ladies, there’s a flying terrestrial in the store, can we focus?’
This good-naturedly silly sci-fi comedy from director Reitman, who made Ghostbusters, is just okay, with a good-natured spirit, game performances, and two or three enjoyable monsters. But a severe lack of hilarious gags and funny situations in Don Jakoby’s screenplay keeps the fun far too low key and the finale is a bit of a washout.
Nevertheless, the film’s good spirit and the pleasing turns from the nice, well-cast actors (including also Orlando Jones, funny goofy Seann William Scott, Ted Levine and Ethan Suplee) definitely help to compensate, though.
