Father of the Bride Part II * (1995, Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Martin Short) – Classic Movie Review 10,382

Director Charles Shyer’s unwanted 1995 comedy Father of the Bride Part II is the off-target sequel to his 1991 Father of the Bride is a partial remake of 1951’s Father’s Little Dividend, the sequel to the 1950 original Father of the Bride.

The 1991 cast return, with Steve Martin once more scoring strongly in his appealing, skilled performance as the dad. George Banks, who has to cope with both his daughter’s and wife’s pregnancies. Martin was a Golden Globe nominee for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, and he keeps the movie motoring, as well as just occasionally funny.

But again Kimberly Williams and George Newbern give vapid performances as the young couple, Diane Keaton makes surprisingly little impression in her underwritten role as the mom, and Martin Short continues his unwelcome anti-gay stereotype performance as the posh society caterer.

And Nancy Myers and Charles Shyer’s screenplay and Charles Shyer’s direction frequently falter once more in this old-fashioned, out of its time material. It is based on Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich’s screenplay Father’s Little Dividend. However, Alan Silvestri’s score is an asset.

Steve Martin, Diane Keaton and Florence Pugh team up for ‘Father of the Bride Part 3-ish’ as the cast reunites for a virtual Netflix sequel in September 2020.

Also in the cast are Kieran Culkin, B D Wong, Peter Michael Goetz, Kate McGregor Stewart, Martha Gehman and Eugene Levy.
