Director Félix Enríquez Alcalá’s violent environmentalist 1997 action thriller Fire Down Below is based on a story by Jeb Stuart, and stars Steven Seagal, Kris Kristofferson and Marg Helgenberger.
Evil industrialists like Orin Hanner Sr (Kristofferson) are dumping toxic waste in disused Kentucky mines, killing fish and poisoning local children. But tough environment protection agent Jack Taggart (Seagal) comes to the rescue to put those industrialists in their place.
Fire Down Below is strongly cast and slick, if only moderate action entertainment with the environment issue on its mind. But the emphasis still on violent fighting – very strange bedfellows. Seagal’s embarrassing attempts to get in touch with his soft side include him strumming guitar and singing his own country tunes!
Also in the cast are Stephen Lang, Harry Dean Stanton, Levon Helm, Richard Masur, John Diehl, Robert Ridgely, Randy Travis, Marty Stuart, Travis Tritt, Brad Hunt, Mark Collis, Alex Harvey, Ed Bruce, Angela Neighbors, Michael Krawic, Clay Jeter, Yvonne Pollard, Newell Alexander, Peggy Lynn, Patsy Lynn, Michael Mattison, Dennis Letts, Melodie Past, and Petrice Jordan.
