American star Denzel Washington comes to the UK to play a working-class soldier from an inner London council estate in Brixton, who, on his return from the Falklands War, finds that nobody wants to give him legitimate work and that he is no longer eligible for a British passport.
Director Martin Stellman’s 1988 For Queen & Country is an important, thoughtful ‘urban Western’ with an intense and commendable performance by Washington (though the accent is wobbly). But the film overreaches itself and descends into melodrama. Stellman was much nearer the target with his script for Defence of the Realm.
For Queen & Country is written by Martin Stellman and Trix Worrell.
The cast include Dorian Healy, Amanda Redman, Sean Chapman, Bruce Payne, Geff Francis, George Baker, Craig Fairbrass, Graham McTavish, Frank Harper, Michael Bray, Stella Gonet, Colin Thomas.
