Director Marcus Nispel’s stylish, well-acted and engrossing 2004 contemporary horror thriller, set in present-day America, is based on a concept by Dean R Koontz and written by John Shiban, inspired by Mary Shelley’s famous tale.
Parker Posey and Adam Goldberg star as two New Orleans police detectives, Detective Carson O’Conner and Detective Michael Sloane who are on the trail of a serial killer who mutilates and removes victims’ internal organs.
Meeting the mysterious Deucalion (Vincent Perez), they find Dr Frankenstein is alive under the name of Dr Victor Helios (Thomas Kretschmann), who sustained himself and his Creature through genetic experimentation over two centuries. Daniel Pearl’s creepy cinematography and Normand Corbeil’s eerie score combine with Shiban’s screenplay to help create a very chilling atmosphere.
Posey and Goldberg are an unusual pair and all the more effective for it. Michael Madsen plays Detective Harker, Brett Rice is Detective Frye and Ivana Milicevic is Erika Helios.
