Writer-director Ranald MacDougall’s 1961 film Go Naked in the World might have worked as a frothy comedy in the 1930s, but not as romantic drama in 1961, and the result is a leaden concoction with over-stated, often embarrassing performances.
Upright Nick Stratton (Tony Franciosa) takes beautiful lady of easy virtue Giulietta Cameron (Gina Lollobrigida) home to meet the folks, and finds that her reputation precedes her, and that his successful Greek immigrant father Pete Stratton (Ernest Borgnine) is just one of the many who already ‘know’ her.
Though the cast are appealing and try hard, La Lollo isn’t at her best, and nor are Franciosa and Borgnine.
That is because of the iffy screenplay by Ranald MacDougall and Charles Walters, based on the book by Tom T Chamales.
Also in the cast are Luana Patten as Yvonne Stratton, Will Kuluva, Philip Ober, John Kellogg, Nancy R Pollock, Tracey Roberts, Yale Wexler, Rodney Bell, John Gallaudet, Chet Stratton, Maggie Pierce, William Smith and Jacqueline Smith.
The film made a loss to MGM of $1,462,000.
