Ethan Hawke stars as Tom Egan, a Las Vegas-based fighter pilot turned drone pilot who fights the Taliban by remote control for 12 hours a day, then goes home to the suburbs and feuds with his wife Molly (January Jones) and kids.
But this family man is beginning to question the ethics of his job. He fears he is killing innocent people in the collateral damage that the CIA and US Government think is okay, and ultimately waging an unending war that is creating more terrorists than it kills.
Intense and brooding, Hawke gives an excellent account of himself in this provocative drama, and Bruce Greenwood deserves a best supporting actor Oscar nomination for his commanding role as his commander and friend, Jack Johns. Zoë Kravitz also does well as tormented fellow drone pilot Vera Suarez.
Attacking Obama’s on-going drone war, writer-director Andrew Niccol’s sharply shot, intelligently written, admirable film is in many ways the equal of Clint Eastwood’s similar American Sniper. It has something on its mind and it says it cogently.
