‘It Takes A Smart Girl To Know Her Own Husband!’ Director Sam Wood’s bright and breezy 1945 black and white romantic comedy Guest Wife stars Claudette Colbert) as American small-town wife Mary Price, who upsets her bank executive husband Chris (Dick Foran) when she poses as the wife of his boyhood friend, war correspondent Joe (Don Ameche) to fool his boss.
Vivacious, highly amusing performances from the stars, especially Colbert at her comedic best, and firm direction by Wood, controlling the comedy, bring all the flair that Bruce Manning and John D Klorer’s screenplay needs to make it sparkle.
Guest Wife is a lot of vintage fun and it is still richly entertaining. Daniele Amfitheatrof’s score was Oscar nominated for Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture.
Guest Wife also features Charles Dingle, Grant Mitchell, Marlo Dwyer, Chester Clute, Irving Bacon, Hal K Dawson, Edward Fielding, Wilma Francis and Mary Forbes.
It was part financed by New Jersey bootlegger Abner ‘Longy’ Zwillman, a boyfriend of Jean Harlow.
