Writer-director Eric Blakeney’s 2000 comedy Gun Shy stars Liam Neeson, Sandra Bullock and Oliver Platt.
Liam Neeson stars as undercover DEA agent Charlie Mayough nearly gets killed after a bust goes wrong and understandably finds his latest assignment to bring down the Mafia particularly stressful – and, suffering from anxiety and gastrointestinal problems, has to go into therapy, with psychiatrist Dr Jeff Bleckner (Michael Mantell).
Gun Shy is a shaky, unconvincing comedy that has its moments – but it never comes together as an enjoyable whole. Neeson and Platt (as a bumbling crook, Fulvio Nesstra) do well, but they are fighting an uphill battle against a lame script.
Producer Bullock has little to do as Neeson’s flaky girlfriend, Judy Tipp, the beautiful free-spirited self-proclaimed Enema Queen, who introduces him to alternative therapies.
It is produced by Bullock’s production company, Fortis Films, and Buena Vista Film Sales acquired and financed the film and it is distributed through Hollywood Pictures.
It is the first film directed by Blakeney.
Also in the cast are José Zúñiga as Fidel Vaillar, Michael DeLorenzo as bodyguard Estuvio Clavo, Richard Schiff, Andrew Laur, Paul Ben-Victor, Ben Weber, Mary McCormack, Michael Mantell, Mitch Pileggi, Louis Giambalvo, Rick Peters as DEA Agent Bennett, Dusty Kay as DEA Agent Kapstein, Jerry Stahl as Lucien, Michael Weatherly as DEA Agent Dave Juniper, Frank Vincent as mobster Carmine Minetti, Taylor Negron as Cheemo Partelle.
