Director George Waggner’s 1947 carefully crafted Columbia Pictures colour Western film Gunfighters [The Assassin] stars Randolph Scott, Barbara Britton, Dorothy Hart, Bruce Cabot, and Forrest Tucker, and is based on Zane Grey’s 1941 novel Twin Sombreros.
It is the same old Randolph Scott and the same old Western yarn about the gunfighter who wants to hang up his weapons after being forced to shoot his best friend, and becomes a cowhand on a ranch. but is caught up in a range war started by a cattle baron (Griff Barnett).
But, despite that familiarity, the film runs well, and everything is tickety-boo in the acting, script (Alan Le May), Cinecolor photography (Fred H Jackman Jr), score (Rudy Schrager), production (Harry Joe Brown) and direction departments. It provides a solid star role for dependable Scott and showy roles for Forrest Tucker and Bruce Cabot as bad guys and for Barbara Britton and Dorothy Hart as the sisters attracted to Scott.
The cast are Randolph Scott, Barbara Britton, Dorothy Hart, Bruce Cabot, Forrest Tucker, Charley Grapewin, Steven Geray, Charles Kemper, Grant Withers, John Miles, and Griff Barnett.
It was shot at Andy Jauregui Ranch and Monogram Ranch in Newhall, California, Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park in Agua Dulce, California, and Sedona, Arizona.
Release date: July 15, 1947.
The film was released in the UK as The Assassin.
Barbara Britton (born Barbara Maurine Brantingham; September 26, 1920 – January 17, 1980) is best remembered for her Western roles with Randolph Scott, Joel McCrea and Gene Autry.
