Director Iain Softley’s 1995 British thriller largely squanders its exceptional cast is in this flashy and pacy but ultimately empty computer hacking yarn. A bunch of bright young cyberpunk hackers take on the American Secret Service and a computer mastermind, The Plague (Fisher Stevens), out to destroy computerland with a deadly virus.
Computer movies are difficult to make work, and, to be fair, this one does have a decent try before it finally goes down in flames.
However, with Jonny Lee Miller, the 20-year-old Angelina Jolie, Jesse Bradford and Matthew Lillard starring, the cast remains attractive and appealing, papering over the many cracks in the screenplay by writer Rafael Moreu.
Jonny Lee Miller is the grandson of actor Bernard Lee (M in the Bond movies). He was married to Jolie on 28 March 1996 and divorced on 3 February 1999.
