John Cho and Kal Penn star as druggies Harold and Kumar, who want to get their munchies by going to the White Castle burger bar, but everything seems to get in the way. Their car’s nabbed by Neil Patrick Harris (as himself!), they land in jail and encounter spotty trucker Christopher Meloni, who likes to lend out his cute wife to strangers.
Director Danny Leiner’s 2004 slacker comedy earns a tentative welcome, but neither the busy yet vacant script nor the game, appealing performers manages to raise too many laughs in this rough and dumb farce, making free and easy with the sex and drugs.
Paula Garcés, Eddie Kaye Thomas, David Krumholtz, Ryan Reynolds, Fred Willard and Ethan Embry are also in the cast of laughter-raisers.
Rated R for strong language, sexual content, drug use and some crude humour.
It’s also called Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. Followed by Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (2008).
