Director Bruce Geller’s 1973 pickpocket comedy crime drama Harry in Your Pocket is a cute, nifty and pleasing caper comedy, very much of its period, with Michael Sarrazin, James Coburn and Walter Pidgeon as three generations of pickpockets working Seattle and Salt Lake City.
Coburn twinkles as Harry, Sarrazin is appealing, and Trish Van Devere brings the neat romance, but it is Pidgeon’s film, sparkling as the old fence.
Most of the time it works very well, though Pickpocket it ain’t. The unusual locations and its nice, changing mood and effective help keep it seeming fresh. Everyone can take credit – writers (James David Buchanan, Ron Austin), actors, cinematographer (Fred J Koenekamp), composer (Lalo Schifrin) and director.
Also in the cast are Michael C Gwynne, Tony Giorgio, Michael Stearns, Sue Mullen, Duane Bennett, Stanley Bolt, Barry Grimshaw, Robert Antrim and Dorothy Antrim.
