Director R G Springsteen’s gutsy, keeping-it-real 1964 B-movie Western He Rides Tall, with its heavy ‘man’s-gotta-do what a man’s-gotta-do’ message and a robust Dan Duryea star turn, was considered tough and sadistic in its day.
Tony Young also stars as lawman Marshal Morg Rocklin who quits his job in order to marry, but then goes to his foster father Bart Thorne (Duryea)’s ranch to settle things after he has killed Duryea’s real son.
You expect colour in 1964, but Ellis W Carter’s eye-catching cinematography is in good old black and white.
Also in the cast are Madlyn Rhue as Ellie Daniels, Jo Morrow as Katie McCloud, R G Armstrong as Josh McCloud, Joel Fluellen, Carl Reindel, Mickey Simpson, George Murdock, Michael Carr, George Petrie, Roy Barcroft, Myron Healey and Charles W Irwin.
He Rides Tall is written by Charles W Irwin and Robert Creighton Williams, based on a story by Charles W Irwin.
It was released by Universal Pictures on 26 February 1964.
Young and Duryea also made Taggart with Springsteen.
Tony Young (1937–2002) was the son of radio, TV and film character actor Carleton G Young.
