On on-air outburst between opposing Baltimore TV commentators Dan and Lorie (Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth Perkins) prompts each of them to recall their combative relationship and romance. Their views of events differ widely and sparks are bound to fly.
Like the title suggests, directors Ken Kwapis and Marisa Silver’s 1991 He Said, She Said is a two-part romantic comedy of a doomed love affair between these yuppie Baltimore newsfolk seen from both sides like Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon or its remake The Outrage.
In the Kwapis-directed first half, it is Bacon telling the tale, and in the second Silver-directed half, it is Perkins’s turn. There is some pleasant, old-fashioned fun to be found in this antique-style battle-of-the-sexes comedy, though perhaps not enough, and it went straight to video in Britain.
The idea is good and the on-form top performers are amiable, helping it over the script hurdles. But the screenplay by Brian Hohlfeld is not nearly witty or sharp enough. Old-timers Phil Leeds and Rita Karin are assets.
It also stars Sharon Stone, Nathan Lane and Anthony LaPaglia.
Also in the cast are Stanley Anderson, Charlayne Woodard, Danton Stone and Erika Alexander.
