Her Jungle Love *** (1938, Dorothy Lamour, Ray Milland, Lynne Overman, J Carrol Naish) – Classic Movie Review 5737

The genial Dorothy Lamour and Ray Milland are back in the Paramount Pictures studio jungle (after their 1936 hit The Jungle Princess) for this second romantic comedy adventure, directed by George Archainbaud in 1938.

It sticks close to the original winning formula, with Lamour as Tura, another saronged tropical lovely, and Milland as Bob Mitchell, a red-blooded male who crash-lands in a typhoon on her island while searching the South Pacific for a missing aviator with his buddy Jimmy Wallace.

It is sweetly sentimental escapism that rang bells at the box-office, thanks to partly to the good production but mainly to the charming performances of the eager-to-please stars. Lynne Overman also scores as Milland’s fellow survivor, Jimmy Wallace, with J Carrol Naish noticeable as the villainous Kuasa, who kidnapped Tura as a child.

Paramount’s bigger budget afforded very welcome colour this time – shot in glorious Technicolor too by Ray Rennahan! – this time.

Also in the cast are Dorothy Howe, Virginia Vale [Dorothy Howe], Jonathan Hale, Archie Twitchell, Edward Earle, Sonny Chorre, Tony Urchell, Richard Denning and Phil Warren.

It is written by Joseph Moncure March, Lillie Hayward and Eddie Welch from a story by Gerald Geraghty, and Curt Siodmak. It is produced by, George M Arthur, designed by A Earl Hedrick and Hans Dreier, and scored by Gregory Stone, with music by Frederick Hollander and Ralph Rainger, and lyrics by Ralph Freed, Ralph Rainger and Leo Robin. Lamour  performs Lovelight in the Starlight.

A lot of highly professional work has gone into it to entertain us.
