Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day are back as Nick, Kurt and Dale, who previously had horrible bosses but now decide to start a business of their own making patented shower heads – the Shower Buddy. [Cue gay shower gags.] Of course things don’t go as planned, because nasty slick investor Bert Hanson (Christoph Waltz) messes them over.
So the trio do what everybody would do in the circumstances – plot to pull off a hare-brained scheme to kidnap Hanson’s crazy grown-up son Rex (Chris Pine) and ransom him to regain control of their company. In this plan they have help from Dean ‘MF’ Jones (Jamie Foxx) and hindrance from Dave Harken (Kevin Spacey), who’s still in jail, and from sex-mad dentist Dr Julia Harris (Jennifer Aniston) and her sex addiction class. The cops, led by nasty Detective Hatcher (Jonathan Banks), aren’t much help either.
The star trio remain likeable, credible and funny as downtrodden buddies, sharing good comedy chemistry in this love-it-or-hate-it, down-and-dirty Hangover-style farce. The plot’s totally nonsense of course, but at least the script and movie have the courage of their own convictions and move along swiftly, slickly and dynamically.
Pine tries hard to be funny, and ends up looking just dumbly cute, Aniston is a good sport but is required to demean herself to get her mucky laughs, and Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz and Kevin Spacey are not naturally funny men, though they are all posh actors and Academy Award winners and should know better.
It all depends on whether you like Bateman, Sudeikis and Day, and dumb and dumber black comedy with strong crude sexual content and strong language. For those who do, this is the one for a crazy night out. If you like it, you’ll probably want to stay for the scenes during end credits.
Please no Horrible Bosses 3! Remember The Hangover 3?
