Director Jerry Paris’s 1968 comedy How Sweet It Is! stars James Garner and Debbie Reynolds as Grif and Jenny Henderson, a worried mom and dad who decide to follow their hippie son Davey (Donald Losby), who is holidaying in Europe with his girlfriend.
Jenny (Debbie) flirts with a Gallic charmer of a French lawyer Phillipe Maspere (Maurice Ronet) and Terry-Thomas dithers about as Gilbert Tilly.
Quite sweet it is, thanks to the players and some amusing scenes, but it should have been sweeter.
Producers Garry Marshall and Jerry Belson’s screenplay is based on Muriel Resnick’s novel The Girl in the Turquoise Bikini. When the script-writing struggles, the performers are a comfort.
Also in the cast are Paul Lynde, Marcel Dalio, Donald Losby, Hilarie Thompson, Alexandra Hay, Walter Brooke, Vito Scotti, Gino Conforti, Mary Michael, Walter Brooke, Elena Verdugo, Ann Morgan Guilbert, Patty Regan, Erin Moran, and Penny Marshall.
