In director Donald Petrie’s breezy 2003 romcom How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Kate Hudson stars as Andie Anderson, a magazine writer who is assigned to write an article about how to lose your man.
She needs first-hand experience for the story and that is going to be by trying to dump advertising executive and ladies’ man Benjamin Barry (Matthew McConaughey), who, to win a big campaign, has made a bet that he can make any woman fall in love with him in 10 days.
With Andie anxious to research her How To… article for Composure magazine, the duo meet in a bar shortly after the bet is made. Let battle commence!
The two attractive stars make cute sparring partners in a fairly lively, amusing enough, well-played romantic comedy that follows the traditional route to its expected ending. The writing is a bit strained and patchy but the acting is always engaging and movie is elegantly shot. It should certainly please most die-hard romantics.
Three writers – Burr Steers, Brian Regan and Kristen Buckley – had hands in the screenplay based on a novel by Michele Alexander and Jennie Long.
Also in the cast are Kathryn Hahn, Annie Parisse, Adam Goldberg, Thomas Lennon, Michael Michele, Shalom Harlow, Robert Klein, Bebe Neuwirth, Samantha Quan, Justin Peroff, Celia Weston, James Murtuagh, Archie MacGregor, Rebecca Harris and Liliane Montevecchi as Mrs DeLauer.
