I Still Know What You Did Last Summer * (1998, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr, Brandy Norwood, Mekhi Phifer) – Classic Movie Review 3512

Director Danny Cannon’s grim 1998 horror film I Still Know What You Did Last Summer is an even more humourless, even more mechanical slasher movie sequel to the iffy 1997 hit I Know What You Did Last Summer.

In I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, one year on from the previous bloodbath of killings, someone again dressed as a fisherman with a murderous fish hook in hand, sets out to take revenge on the two remaining teenagers Julie and Ray (Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr) from the quartet who accidentally killed a pedestrian after a July 4 beach party.

There follow more Halloween, Scream and A Nightmare on Elm Street-influenced shenanigans, and pretty nasty they are too. As before, the young cast looks attractive, but they are still pretty well starters in the acting learning department. Trey Callaway’s script (based on the characters created by Lois Duncan), with its shoal of red herrings, stinks like rotting fish, appropriately, since the killer is dressed as a fisherman. This time most of the action is supposed to take place on a nightmare holiday in a storm-lashed Barbados (actually filmed in Mexico in an earthquake-damaged resort).

Director Cannon cannot carve anything very coherent out of the film, but then why should he when the script is more or less totally incoherent? It just moves from one shock or killing to the next, with not much sense or brain in its head. No I Again Still Know What You Did Last Summer, please!
