Susan Hayward and Peter Finch have a thankless task to re-animate I Thank a Fool (1962).
Director Robert Stevens’s 1962 British Metrocolor crime drama I Thank a Fool stars Peter Finch, Susan Hayward, Diane Cilento, Cyril Cusack, Kieron Moore and Athene Seyler.
When Dr Christine Allison (Hayward) is freed from jail for a mercy killing, she replies to an advert for a nurse, which leads her to prosecution lawyer Stephen Dane (Finch). She moves in to his home where his wife Liane (Cilento) is suffering rages of madness.
Actors who deserve better try valiantly in a thankless task with this preposterous, overheated stuff (adapted by Karl Tunberg from a 1958 novel by Audrey Erskine Lindop) that never begins to engage the interest or sympathies.
Cinemagoers didn’t thank them, and the film lost $1,207,000.
It is made in Britain by Eaton (De Grunwald Productions) and MGM in Metrocolor and CinemaScope.
Also in the lovely vintage cast are Richard Wattis, Brenda de Banzie, Mariam Karlin, Laurence Naismith, Clive Morton, J G Devlin, Richard Leech, Yolande Turner, Edwin Apps, Judith Furse, Peter Sallis, Joan Hickson, Peter Vaughan, Grace Arnold, and Joan Benham.
It is produced by Anatole de Grunwald, scored by Ron Goodwin and shot by Harry Waxman.
