Director Mark Robson’s 1951 drama I Want You is producer Samuel Goldwyn’s attempt to update themes from The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) in order to examine the way the Korean War affects an average American family in a Middle American town.
But Goldwyn did not strike gold twice because of Irwin Shaw’s flag-waving, hollow screenplay, based on stories in The New Yorker by Edward Newhouse.
And, while director Robson has good stars in Dorothy McGuire, Dana Andrews, Farley Granger and Peggy Dow, along with strong support, he does not seem to know quite what to do to have the cast make it zing.
Also in the cast are Robert Keith, Ray Collins, Mildred Dunnock, Martin Milner, Jim Backus, Walter Sande and Frank Sully.
I Want You is directed by Mark Robson, 101 minutes, is made by The Samuel Goldwyn Company, is released by RKO Radio Pictures (1951), is written by Irwin Shaw, is shot in black and white by Harry Stradling Sr, is produced by Samuel Goldwyn, is scored by Leigh Harline and is designed by Richard Day.
