Director George Kaczender’s enjoyably sexy 1978 Canadian romantic comedy drama In Praise of Older Women stars the ideally cast young and hunky Tom Berenger, who has a good time as the callow, curly-topped hunk Andras Vajda, masquerading as a Hungarian refugee, making hay with numerous older women.
In Praise of Older Women is relentlessly titillating, but that is part of its charm and allure. The talented Karen Black, Susan Strasberg, Helen Shaver and Alexandra Stewart keep the women’s roles interesting. Strasberg, as Bobbie, particularly stands out among Berenger’s seduction victims. Paul Gottlieb’s screenplay is based on Stephen Vizinczey’s novel.
In war-torn Hungary, married Maya (Karen Black) becomes the first of many mature women who gives Andras lessons in love.
Also in the cast are Marilyn Lightstone, Marianne McIsaac, Alberta Watson, Ian Tracey, Monique LePage, Joan Stuart and John Bayliss.
Karen Black replaced Bibi Andersson at the last minute.
It was filmed at Montréal, Québec, Canada.
In Praise of Older Women is directed by George Kaczender, runs 108 minutes, is made by Astral Bellevue Pathé, Films RSL and Canadian Film Development Corporation, is released by Avco Embassy, is written by Paul Gottlieb, based on Stephen Vizinczey’s novel, is shot in Eastmancolor and black and white by Mikos Lente, produced by Robert Lantos and Claude Heroux, and scored by Tibor Polgar.
