Co-writer/director Todd Field’s scalding 2001 drama film In the Bedroom focuses on the lives of a family in a quiet New England town. They are changed for ever when the eldest son (Nick Stahl) becomes romantically involved with an older woman (Marisa Tomei), who has an angry, jealous ex-husband.
Tom Wilkinson and Sissy Spacek are astonishing as the bereaved parents in this riveting Oscar-nominated drama on the theme of grief.
The film landed five Oscar nominations, including Best Actor and Actress for Wilkinson and Spacek, but alas there were no wins.
It is Spacek’s sixth Best Actress Oscar nomination, including her win for Coal Miner’s Daughter. Her other nominations are for Carrie, Missing (1982), The River (1984), and Crimes of the Heart (1986).
William Mapother, William Wise, Celia Weston, Karen Allen and Frank T Wells co-star. Robert Festinger co-writes the screenplay with Field.
Tom Wilkinson died suddenly at his home on 30 December 2023, at the age of 75.
Tom Wilkinson OBE (5 February 1948 – 30 December 2023) received many awards, including a BAFTA Award for The Full Monty, a Golden Globe and a Primetime Emmy Award, as well as nominations for two Academy Awards, one for Best Actor for In the Bedroom (2001) and the other for Best Supporting Actor for Michael Clayton (2007).
