In the Deep Woods ** (1992, Rosanna Arquette, Anthony Perkins, Will Patton) – Classic Movie Review 9737

Director Charles Correll’s 1992 TV movie In the Deep Woods is an eerie if rather unimaginative and tatty psycho-thriller, with a screenplay by Robert Nathan and Robert Rosenblum based on Nicholas Conde’s novel. It has a decent cast and is handled with just a little drive and incisiveness.

A tragically sick and haunted-looking Anthony Perkins, in his final role before his death from AIDS complications on 12 September 1992, overacts as Paul Miller, the private detective tracking a serial killer terrorising children’s author Joanna Warren (Rosanna Arquette). Her friend has been murdered by the Deep Woods Killer, who dumped her body in the forest.

Joanna fears the killer might be the detective, the cop Eric (Will Patton), her boyfriend Frank (D W Moffett), or her brother Tommy (Christopher Rydell).

On the plus side are the performances by Arquette, Moffett, Rydell, and Patton, as well the score by Sylvester Levay and the creepy atmosphere in the script and James Glennon’s photography.

Also in the cast are Amy Ryan, Beth Broderick, Harold Sylvester, Kimberly Beck, Paul Peri, Greg Kean, Ned Bellamy and Mary Gregory.

In the Deep Woods is directed by Charles Correll, runs 94 minutes, is made by Frederic Golchan Productions and Leonard Hill Films, is released by NBC (1992) (US) (TV) and Columbia TriStar (video), is written by Robert Nathan and Robert Rosenblum, is shot by James Glennon, is produced by Joel Fields (executive producer), Ron Gilbert (executive producer) and Frederic Golchan, and is scored by Sylvester Levay.

It was shot in San Diego, California.
