‘To hide her homosexuality, she must plead guilty to murder!’
‘In the Glitter Palace… where the gay people meet.’
Director Robert Butler’s intense 1977 legal drama In the Glitter Palace stars Chad Everett as the lawyer-detective who uncovers more than he bargained for in his investigation of a lesbian accused of the murder of her blackmailer. The rising star lawyer’s ex-girlfriend, who had left him for a lesbian lover, asks him to defend her best friend, charged with a vicious murder that she says she did not commit.
Barbara Hershey gives her usual fine performance, for which she sensitively plays a lesbian, in this intriguing and moderately effective crime drama, written by Jerry Ludwig [Jerrold L Ludwig], with something on its mind as well as just the efficient thriller plot.
Anthony Zerbe, Howard Duff, David Wayne, Carole Cook, Ron Rifkin, Diana Scarwid, and Tisha Sterling are also in the very interesting cast.
It is made by Writers’ Company and Columbia Pictures Television, and first aired in the US on 27 February 1977 on NBC.
This was the golden era of the TV movie and the Movie of the Week. Though hundreds of TV movies were made, only a small number have been released on DVD, but happily this one has. Other lesbian TV movies of the era are The War Widow (1976) and the 1978 drama A Question of Love.
