Director Tim Whelan’s 1941 International Lady stars George Brent as an FBI agent called Tim Hanley who is on the trail of Carla Nillson (Ilona Massey) and her international spies, but soon he is succumbing to her fatal allure. Rather quaintly, it seems that Massey is alerting German U-boats via opera on the radio.
This espionage suspense thriller is unoriginal and surface deep, but it is undemandingly entertaining and amusing enough. The performances from a good cast help, particularly Basil Rathbone’s Scotland Yard man, Reggie Oliver, who joins Brent in the race to stop Carla Nillson, but also Massey and George Zucco add considerable value.
Also in the cast are Gene Lockhart, George Zucco, Francis Pierlot, Martin Kosleck, Charles D Brown, Marjorie Gateson, Leyland Hodgson, Clayton Moore, Gordon De Main, Frederick Worlock, Jack Mulhall, Ralph Dunn, Robert Fiske, Selmer Jackson, John Dilson, William Forrest, Martin Garralaga, Charles McAvoy, Trevor Bardette, Otto Reichow and Harold Goodwin.
It was shot in black and white by Edward Small Productions and released by United Artists on 4 February 1938.
International Lady runs 102 minutes, is written by Howard Estabrook, shot by Hal Mohr, produced by Edward Small and scored by Lucien Moraweck.
