Intimate Relations *** (1996, Julie Walters, Rupert Graves, Matthew Walker) – Classic Movie Review 7067

Julie Walters enjoys herself hugely as Marjorie Beasley, a rapacious Fifties English seaside town landlady who fancies her new young seaman lodger Harold Guppy (Rupert Graves) and plots to seduce him and ends up sharing his bed.

Both stars are spot on in writer-director Philip Goodhew’s very funny, successful 1996 black comedy in the Joe Orton vein, though is is based on a true story. The mood and atmosphere of post-war austerity Britain are perfectly captured.

Also in the cast are Matthew Walker, Laura Sadler, Holly Aird, Les Dennis, Liza [Elizabeth] McKechnie, James Airden and Amanda Holden.

Intimate Relations is directed by Philip Goodhew, runs 105 minutes, is a Boxer, HandMade and Paragon production, is released by Fox Searchlight, is written by Philip Goodhew, is shot by André Garreton, is produced by Angela Hart, Lisa Hope and Jon Slan, is scored by Lawrence Shragge and designed by Caroline Greville-Morris.
