It Follows **** (2014, Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist, Lili Sepe, Daniel Zovatto, Jake Weary, Olivia Luccardi) – Movie Review

1

Writer-director David Robert Mitchell’s scary low-budget horror flick It Follows is creepy, clever and stylish.

And if that isn’t recommendation enough, added to this it is just a little bit different, setting it out from the pack of teens in peril stalker movies.

Maika Monroe stars as 19-year-old Jay, who finds herself plagued by strange visions and the inescapable sense that someone, something, is following her. In suburban Detroit, one evening of passion in the back seat of his car with Hugh (Jake Weary) sets off the horror for Jay, as Jake has intentionally passed on to her an affliction that attracts a death-seeking entity. She and her gang – her sister Kelly (Lili Sepe), her neighbour and classmate Greg (Daniel Zovatto), and her admirer Paul (Keir Gilchrist)  –  must desperately find some way to escape the horror only a few steps behind.

Mitchell writes and directs with real brio, using inventive camerawork and unusual, fresh-looking locations, really bringing on the creeps. And the young performers are up for it, with Monroe putting in an impressive bid for Jamie Lee Curtis-style scream queen stardom, channelling Halloween.
