Director Elliott Nugent’s 1937 Columbia Pictures black and white madcap comedy It’s All Yours stars Madeleine Carroll, Francis Lederer and Mischa Auer.
A prized secretary (Madeleine Carroll) inherits a fortune from her millionaire boss that his playboy nephew (Francis Lederer) was expecting. When she takes off for New York on a spending spree, Lederer chases her – for love or money ? – but she’s now courted by the calculating Baron René de Montigny (Mischa Auer).
It’s a shame that nobody shows enough of the charisma and lightness of handling needed in this rather tepid screwball romantic comedy, a soufflé with many of the right ingredients that just refuses to rise properly. The stars are nice but ideally the film needed Cary Grant, Claudette Colbert and Charles Coburn to make it work. Nevertheless, Misha Auer, Grace Bradley and Franklin Pangborn provide considerable amusement.
The screenplay is by Mary C McCall Jr, based on a story by Adelaide Heilbron.
The credited cast are Madeleine Carroll as Linda Gray, Francis Lederer as Jimmy Barnes, Mischa Auer as Baron René de Montigny, Grace Bradley as Constance Marlowe, Victor Kilian as City Clerk, George McKay as License Clerk, Charles Waldron as Alexander Duncan, J C Nugent as E J Barnes, Richard Carle as Judge Reynolds, Arthur Hoyt as Dabney, Franklin Pangborn as Schultz, and Connee Boswell as Singer.
