John and Julie *** (1955, Colin Gibson, Leslie Dudley, Moira Lister, Noelle Middelton, Constance Cummings, Wilfrid Hyde White, Sidney James, Peter Sellers) – Classic Movie Review 12,880

Colin Gibson and Leslie Dudley star as two children who run off  to London to see the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, in the 1955 British nostalgic treat of a comedy film John and Julie.

Writer/ director William Fairchild’s 1955 British nostalgic treat of a comedy film John and Julie stars Colin Gibson, Leslie Dudley, Moira Lister, Noelle Middelton, Constance Cummings, Wilfrid Hyde White, Sidney James, and Peter Sellers. It is shot in Eastman Colour by Arthur Grant.

John and Julie (Gibson, Dudley) are two young children from Dorset who so desperately want to see the investiture and Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II that they decide to run off to London and encounter all kinds of appealing, chirpy characters.

John and Julie is a friendly, small-scale film, with an entertaining story that is attractively shot in Eastman Colour by Arthur Grant, and further lifted by the charming performances of both the children and the more than welcome cast of 1950s adults. BBC royal broadcasters of the day Richard Dimbleby and Wynford Vaughan Thomas pop in as commentators.

Also in the cast are Andrew Cruickshank, Megs Jenkins, Joseph Tomelty, Peter Jones, Katie Johnson, Cyril Smith, Patric Doonan, Colin Gordon, Winifred Shotter, Vincent Ball, Mona Washbourne, Peter Coke, Patrick Connor, Philip Stainton, Molly Weir, and Frazer Hines.

John and Julie is directed by William Fairchild, runs 83 minutes, is made by Group 3 Films, is released by British Lion Films, is written by William Fairchild, is shot  in Eastman Colour by Arthur Grant, is produced by John Baxter (executive producer) and Herbert Mason, and is scored by Philip Green, with Art Direction by Ray Simm.

It was released in the UK on 26 July 1955, more than two years after the Coronation of Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953.

Peter Sellers and Katie Johnson both starred in The Ladykillers that same year.

Frazer Hines attended Corona Theatre School in London where his classmates included Richard O’Sullivan, Dennis Waterman, Jeremy Bulloch and Francesca Annis. He makes his debut in John and Julie as an extra in a crowd scene.

The cast are Colin Gibson as John Pritchett, Lesley Dudley as Julie, Noelle Middleton as Miss Stokes, Moira Lister as Dora, Wilfrid Hyde-White as Sir James, Sid James as Mr Pritchett, Megs Jenkins as Mrs Pritchett, Joseph Tomelty as Mr Davidson, Constance Cummings as Mrs Davidson, Patric Doonan as Jim Webber, Andrew Cruickshank as Uncle Ben, Peter Coke as captain in the Life Guards, Colin Gordon as Mr Swayne, Winifred Shotter as Mrs Swayne, Peter Jones as Jeremy, Vincent Ball as Digger, Peter Sellers as Police Constable Diamond, Patrick Connor as Trooper Rogers, Philip Stainton as London police sergeant, Mona Washbourne as Miss Rendlesham, Molly Weir as Landlady, Katie Johnson as woman in street, Toke Townley as Booking Clerk, Peter Bathurst as Station Master, Maureen Todd as Mildred, Molly Osborne as Alice, John Stuart, George Rose, Russell Waters, Tony Lyons, Charles Lamb, Fred Griffiths, Ben Williams, Bill Shine, Michael Bentine, Marne Maitland, Tony Selby, Richard Dimbleby as commentator, Wynford Vaughan Thomas as commentator, and Frazer Hines in minor role.
