Director Arne Glimcher’s 1995 legal thriller Just Cause stars Sean Connery as anti-death penalty campaigning Harvard law professor Paul Armstrong who looks into all the evidence when he is told that a Death Row killer Bobby Earl (Blair Underwood) is not guilty of raping and brutally murdering a young white girl eight years earlier.
He arrives in Florida’s Everglades to question cynical backwoods cop Sheriff Tanny Brown (Laurence Fishburne) about the murder. But, though Armstrong (Connery) digs up some crucial new evidence, Brown (Fishburne) is satisfied that Earl was the killer.
Connery’s famous charisma and the great cast see this wobbly but slick and flashy crime thriller over its many bumps, twists and turns. Jeb Stuart and Peter Stone’s screenplay is based on John Katzenbach’s novel.
Also in the cast are Kate Capshaw, Ed Harris, Christopher Murray, Ruby Dee, Scarlett Johansson, Daniel J Travanti, Ned Beatty, Liz Torres, Lynne Thigpen, Taral Hicks, Victor Slezak and Kevin McCarthy.
Filming took place from 16 May 1994 to 2 August 1994 in Florida at locations including Lee County, Collier County, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, Fort Denaud, Miami Beach and Gainesville. Another location is Harvard Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
It is the final cinema movie of Hope Lange.
