Writer-director Fred Schepisi bases his touching 2001 film on the acclaimed novel by Graham Swift. Ray, Lenny, Vic and Vince, four long-time old drinking pals travel to Margate to cast the ashes of their buddy, London butcher Jack Dodd (Michael Caine) into the sea, according to his last wishes.
This moving film is an acting feast from Brit favourites Ray Winstone as his foster son Vince, Helen Mirren as his wife Amy, Bob Hoskins as Ray, David Hemmings as Lenny and Tom Courtenay as Vic. Hemmings’s son Nolan plays his younger self.
David Hemmings, for ever remembered as the star of Blow-Up (1966), died on December 3 2003, aged 62.
British national treasure Bob Hoskins died from pneumonia on April 29 2014, aged 71. On 8 August 2012, Hoskins announced his retirement from acting after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2011. He appeared in films such as The Long Good Friday (1980), Mona Lisa (1986), Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), Mermaids (1990) and Hook (1991).
