The title of director Greg Beeman’s 1988 film License to Drive [Licence to Drive] focuses audience attention on exactly what bad boy Les Anderson (Corey Haim) hasn’t got. He failed his driving test, but that doesn’t stop him driving his grandpappy’s Cadillac automobile on a date with the lovely Mercedes Lane (Heather Graham). Trouble ensues of course.
The two Coreys – Corey Haim and Corey Feldman – have a winning, cheeky charisma, but unfortunately director Beeman’s brash teen comedy is not very funny. Beeman can’t keep the rickety vehicle on the road and it ends up in the ditch. License revoked.
Carol Kane and Richard Masur play Les’s parents, Mrs and Mr Anderson. Also in the cast are Michael Manasseri, Harvey Miller, Michael A Nickles, Nina Siemaszko, Grant Goodeve, James Avery, Grant Heslov and Parley Baer.
License to Drive [Licence to Drive] is directed by Greg Beeman, runs 88 minutes, the screenplay is written by Neil Tolkin. It is made by Twentieth Century Fox and Davis Entertainment and released by Twentieth Century Fox.
Corey Haim and Corey Feldman both won the tied 1989 Young Artist Award for Best Young Actor in a Motion Picture Comedy or Fantasy.
It did well at the box office. Costing $8,000,000, it grossed $22,433,000 in the US.
Troubled star Corey Haim died of pneumonia on March 10 2010, aged 38. He starred in eight movies with his friend Corey Feldman: The Lost Boys (1987), License to Drive (1988), Dream a Little Dream (1989), Blown Away (1993), Last Resort (1994), Dream a Little Dream 2 (1995), Busted (1997) and Lost Boys: The Tribe (2008).
