Co-writer/director Andrew Scheinman’s 1994 children’s sports comedy drama is sweet and enjoyable, and makes strong family entertainment. Though aimed at kids, adults can certainly enjoy it too and baseball fans won’t be ashamed of it either.
After beloved granddad Thomas Heywood (Jason Robards) dies suddenly, he leaves in his will his Minnesota Twins baseball team to his 12-year-old fanatical baseball fan grandson Billy (Luke Edwards). The boy promptly sacks their hated manager and then proceeds to manage it himself.
Though the movie takes a dip when the charismatic Robards disappears from it – fat too early – the nice cast smoothes the way to a home run and Edwards proves a classy little actor.
Scheinman co-writes the screenplay with Gregory K Pinkus, who provided the original story.
Timothy Busfield, John Ashton, Ashley Crow, Kevin Dunn, Billy L Sullivan, Miles Feulner, Jonathan Silverman, Dennis Farina, Wolfgang Bodison and Vincent Kartheiser are also in the cast.
Walt Disney released a similar movie, Angels in the Outfield, in the same year, 1994.
