Writer-director Walter Bernstein’s 1980 comedy Little Miss Marker stars an even more grumpy than usual Walter Matthau as Sorrowful Jones, the bookie blessed with a little bundle of cute trouble, The Kid (Sara Stimson), left by a gambler as a marker for a bet, in this fair remake of Damon Runyon’s short story.
The strong cast helps it to score, but it is a dated tale that looks out of place in the Eighties.
It also stars Julie Andrews, Tony Curtis, Bob Newhart, Sara Stimson, Lee Grant, Brian Dennehy, Kenneth McMillan, Joshua Shelley and Andrew Rubin.
Little Miss Marker is directed by Walter Bernstein, runs 103 minutes, is made by Universal Pictures, is released by Universal, is written by Walter Bernstein, based on Damon Runyon’s short story, is shot in Technicolor by Philip Lathrop, is produced by Jennings Lang and is scored by Henry Mancini.
It was previously made as Little Miss Marker in 1934 with Shirley Temple and Adolphe Menjou, as Sorrowful Jones with Bob Hope in 1949 and as 40 Pounds of Trouble in 1962.
