Writer-director Amy Heckerling’s 1989 comedy Look Who’s Talking is the movie that started to rejuvenate John Travolta’s career and turned Kirstie Alley into a movie star. Made in Canada, it is a witty and well-acted crowd pleaser.
When single, career-minded Mollie (Alley) becomes pregnant by selfish older married man Albert (George Segal), she is rushed to hospital by nice cab-driver James (Travolta) and it is no shock that they fall in love, but it is a delightful surprise when the baby they have, Mikey, talks with the voice of Bruce Willis.
This sweet and simple idea and the sparkling sexual chemistry between gorgeous Alley and a tubby Travolta are quite enough to make this one of the comedies of the year, even for those normally immune to baby movies. It pulls off a rare trick of being genial, charming and funny with no obvious effort and actually with some style.
Look Who’s Talking Too followed in 1990 and Look Who’s Talking Now! in 1993.
Pulp Fiction (1994) finally rejuvenated John Travolta’s career.
Also in the cast are Olympia Dukakis, Abe Vigoda, Don S Davis, Louis Heckerling, Brenda Crichlow, Andrea Mann, Douglas Tuck, Alex Bruhanski, Casey Grant and Twink Caplan.
In September 2018, Kirstie Alley shot down John Travolta gay rumours by revealing that they were once ‘in love’ and that she almost married him. ‘I still love him,’ she said.
Kirstie Alley died on 5 December 2022, after a short battle with cancer, aged 71.
