Looker *** (1981, Albert Finney, James Coburn, Susan Dey) – Classic Movie Review 8425

Writer-director Michael Crichton’s ambitious and intriguing 1981 sci-fi murder-thriller Looker stars Albert Finney as Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr Larry Roberts, who performs a series of minor alterations on a group of models and then investigates the mystery behind the murders of his beautiful former clients featuring in evil tycoon John Reston (James Coburn)’s computerised images at his high-tech company Digital Matrix.

Looker is a somewhat bland movie – unexpectedly, since it has an incisive topic – but it is interesting throughout and is given a fascinating slant in its assault on advertising and the desperate search for physical perfection.

The lip-smacking performances of the two male stars help it along nicely. Also in the cast are Susan Dey, Leigh Taylor-Young, Dorian Harewood, Tim Rossovich, Darryl Hickman, Kathryn Witt, Terri Welles, Terry Kiser and Vanna White.
