Mickey Rooney stars as teenage Andy Hardy who becomes entangled with three girls at the same time in director George B Seitz’s amusing and enjoyable 1938 MGM romantic comedy film, Love Finds Andy Hardy.
It also stars Lewis Stone as Judge James Hardy, Fay Holden as Mrs Hardy, Cecilia Parker as Marian Hardy, Judy Garland as Betsy Booth (‘I sing, you know’), Lana Turner as Cynthia, Ann Rutherford as Polly Benedict, Mary Howard as Mrs Mary Tompkins and Gene Reynolds as ‘Jimmy’ MacMahon Jr.
The diverting screenplay is by William Ludwig, from stories by Vivien R Bretherton, and based on characters created by Aurania Rouverol, who first appeared in A Family Affair (1937). Rouverol’s source play Skidding opened in New York on 21 May 1928.
Love Finds Andy Hardy was the first film where MGM recorded at least part of the soundtrack in stereophonic sound though it was presented in monaural sound.
Garland also played Betsy in two other Andy Hardy movies, Andy Hardy Meets Debutante (1940) and Life Begins for Andy Hardy (1941).
