Writer-director Valerie Breiman’s delicious 2000 romantic comedy drama Love & Sex stars Famke Janssen and Jon Favreau.
Janssen plays a magazine journalist called Kate Welles who ditches her companion at an art exhibition for a painter named Adam Levy (Favreau), and they embark on an on-off affair. Breiman’s movie is a pleasantly provocative, extremely engaging and consistently amusing feature-length sitcom.
Kate is asked by her editor to come up with an article on loving relationships by the end of the day instead of the raunchy work she has submitted. Kate reflects on her experiences in voice over narration.
It is Janssen’s best role so far and she gives a winning turn as a worldly-wise, yet world-weary working girl for whom the road to love (‘ecstasy and agony’) is a bitter-sweet journey. Favreau oozes quirky charm and crumpled sex appeal effortlessly. David Schwimmer is a hoot in an unbilled cameo as a Jehovah’s Witness.
Also in the cast are Cheri Oteri, Noah Emmerich, Ann Magnuson, Josh Hopkins, Robert Knepper, Vincent Ventresca, Kristen Zang, David Steinberg, Elimu Nelson, Don Brunner, Yvonne Zima, Melissa Fitzgerald, Rob Swnason, Will Rothaar, Rance Howard, Ron Kochevar, Angela Marsden, Troy Blendell and Nicolette Little.
As an actress, Breiman played Erin in She’s Having a Baby and Megan in
Casual Sex?. Her other films as director are Going Overboard, Bikini Squad and Overnight.
