Trendy director (Kevin Smith), trendy stars (Jeremy London, Jason Lee), but only a semi-success this time.
When the going gets tough, teenage slackers Jeremy London and Jason Lee head down to their local shopping mall, to hang out with the weirdos and try to get their girls Shannen Doherty and Claire Forlani back.
Cult director Kevin Smith’s limper 1995 follow-up to his hit debut Clerks isn’t nearly as funny or clever, with a screenplay and handling (both by Smith) that are as slack and oddball as his characters. But Mallrats still has its amusing and appealingly quirky moments, and is well performed by the choice ensemble.
With Ben Affleck and Joey Lauren Adams also in the cast, it’s well worth checking out. As always, Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith play Jay and Silent Bob, amusingly too. Smith and his stars Lee, Adams and Affleck stormed back with Chasing Amy in 1997.
