‘Master’s law was one of order. Friday’s law was one of life. Each tried to overcome the other!’
Director Jack Gold’s 1975 British adventure drama film Man Friday is a revisionist version of Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe with Friday the clever one.
Man Friday is sluggish and over-extended, running way too long at 115 minutes, but sometimes affecting and entertaining, and always intelligent, thanks to the screenplay by Adrian Mitchell, based on his play.
It is helped by the sterling performances of Peter O’Toole (as 17th century shipwrecked English seaman Crusoe) and Richard Roundtree (as his native Man Friday), and by some imaginative work by director Gold.
Also in the cast are Peter Cellier, Christopher Cabot, Joel Fluellen, Sam Seabrook and Stanley Clay.
It was shot in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico.
