Writer-director Woody Allen’s witty 2004 movie has writers arguing at dinner how they would tell a tale. So sad divorcée Melinda (Radha Mitchell) gatecrashes a party, and then the yarn is played for serious and also for laughs.

The drama (with Jonny Lee Miller, Chloë Sevigny and Chiwetel Ejiofor) is clever and the romantic comedy (with Will Ferrell) is funny and appealing. Ferrell is an effortless hoot.

Also in the cast are Wallace Shawn, Zak Orth, Amanda Peet and Vinessa Shaw.
