Dudley Moore reunites with his 10 director Blake Edwards for this variable but mostly amiable 1984 romantic comedy Micki + Maude about a Lothario TV host, reporter Rob Salinger (Moore), caught between his pregnant wife Micki and his pregnant girlfriend, cellist Maude. He then marries the latter to keep her happy, only to find that bigamy means more trouble than he bargained for.

Ann Reinking and Amy Irving are Micki and Maude, the women under Dud’s spell, and they each give sparkly turns that see the movie through its draggy spots. Dudley Moore is good too, and he won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical.

Micki + Maude may not be uproariously funny, but it rolls along merrily and reaches a satisfyingly frantic climax.

Also in the cast are Richard Mulligan, George Gaynes, Wallace Shawn, John Pleshette, George Coe, H B Haggerty, Lu Leonard, Priscilla Pointer, Robert Symonds, Gustav Vintas, Ken Olfson, Philippe Denham, Emma Walton, Ruth Silveira, André the Giant and Jack Wildman Armstrong.

It runs a lengthy 118 minutes, but CBS cut 22 minutes out of it for its 1987 US network TV premiere.

RIP Ann Reinking, who died on 12 December 2020, aged 71. She made her film debut in Movie Movie (1978) and the following year starred in the Bob Fosse biopic All That Jazz (1979). Perhaps her best performance was in her last film, Micki + Maude.
