Director Michael Anderson’s 1989 sci-fi thriller Millennium stars Kris Kristofferson as Bill Smith, the National Transportation Safety Board chief investigator, who is heading an investigation into a mid-air plane crash when he meets and goes to bed with mysterious Louise Baltimore (Cheryl Ladd), who promptly disappears.
She has been sent from the future, by a dying civilisation, to pluck people from the brink of disaster and beam them up to her world.
John Varley’s feeble screenplay doesn’t have much idea how to develop this intriguing idea from his short story Air Raid, though the affable stars and director Anderson seem to be game for anything.
Sci-fi fans will enjoy the distinguished sets and special effects, and chortle at the unintentionally funny dialogue.
Also in the cast are Daniel J Travanti, Robert Joy, Lloyd Bochner, Brent Carver, David McIlwraith, Maury Chaykin and Al Waxman.
RIP Brent Carver, who was born in Cranbrook, British Columbia, Canada, and died there on August 4, 2020, aged 68. He won Broadway’s 1993 Tony Award as Best Actor (Musical) for Kiss of the Spider Woman – The Musical and was also nominated in 1999 for Parade.
