Formulaic but quite creepy and atmospheric 2001 direct-to-DVD sequel to the 1997 chiller hit with none of the original stars. A New York police detective named Det. Klaski (Bruno Campos) suspects that a high school teacher called Remi Panos (Alix Koromzay) has begun a murderous rampage until he realises that it’s the shape-shifting mutant insect stalking her that is responsible.
Yes, although they were all thought to be dead at the end of part one, the giant ‘Judas Breed’ bugs from the original 1997 Mimic are back, mutated to take on human form and mimic their human prey. This time the giant genetically altered bug develops a crush on Remi and avoids capture by an elite military force by passing itself off as a member of the NYPD!
The stock characters are appealing played in this acceptable and more than watchable, dark-toned B-movie monster bug movie, with one or two nicely done special-effects sequences, quite convincing pseudo-science in Joel Soisson’s screenplay and some good set pieces, well staged by director Jean de Segonzac. Jamison Scott Goei’s won the Best Visual Effects award at the DVD Exclusive Awards in 2001.
It also stars Will Estes (as Nicky), Edward Albert (Darksuit) and Jon Polito (as Morrie Deaver). Also in the cast are Jody Wood, Jim O’Heir, Gaven E Lucas, Brian Leckner, Paul Schulze, Michael Tucci, Joseph Hodge and Alex Draper.
Sequel: Mimic: Sentinel (2003), with none of the original stars.
