Minnie and Moskowitz **** (1971, Gena Rowlands, Seymour Cassel, Val Avery) – Classic Movie Review 8534

Minnie and Moskowitz is a surprisingly relaxed and gentle 1971 romantic drama film from cult favourite writer-director John Cassavetes.

It once again stars his wife Gena Rowlands, who plays Minnie, a Los Angeles museum curator, and Seymour Cassel, as Moskowitz, a car-park attendant enjoying the rocky road to romance.

This zany, warm and affecting picture can readily and generally be liked, enjoyed and admired, possibly even loved, even by Cassavetes’s non-fans.

Also in the cast are Val Avery, Timothy Carey, Katherine Cassavetes, Elizabeth Deering, Elsie Ames, Lady Rowlands, David Rowlands, Holly Near, Judith Roberts, Jack Danskin, Eleanor Zee, Santos Morales, Kathleen O’Malley, Jimmy Joyce, Chuck Wells, Sean Joyce, Alexandra Cassavetes, Zoe R Cassavetes and John Cassavetes.

Minnie and Moskowitz is directed by John Cassavetes, runs 115 minutes, is made by Faces Music and Universal Pictures, is released by Universal, is written by John Cassavetes, is shot in Technicolor by Arthur J Ornitz and Alric Edens and Michael Margulies, is produced by Al Ruban and Paul Donnelly, and is scored by Bob Harwood.

It was made for $900,000, with filming taking place in Los Angeles and New York City.
